I said to the man at the gate of the Year
“Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.”
And he replied,
“Go out into the darkness
and put your hand into the hand of God.
That shall be to you better than light,
and safer than a known way.”
— King George VI to His People

A Man Called Intrepid is a biography of Sir William Stevenson, Canadian, WWI fighter pilot, scientist, inventor, and industrialist, who had overall responsibiility for British intelligence and underground operations during WWII. The subject of the book and its author—while having the same names—are unrelated. In addition to numerous accounts of undercover operations, the book throws light on British-US relations prior to America's entry into the war. It also shows how loyalty to the King helped stiffen behind-the-scenes resistance to the Government's appeasement policy.
