Stop Mass Rape!

Vicious and sadistic rape on a massive scale is being used by the Burmese military to terrorize the population throughout much of the country. A report by the Women's League of Burma details sexual violence committed by Burma Army troops in Arakan, Karen, Karenni, Mon and Shan States and Tennasserim Division.

An investigation by the Shan Women's Action Network and Shan Human Rights Foundation details a sample of some 625 cases of rape and other forms of sexual violence in the Shan State. Their report can be viewed at http://www.shanland.org/shrf/License_to_Rape/license_to_rape.htm.
Amongst their findings:

the rapes involve extreme brutality and often torture such as beating, mutilation and suffocation
death ensues in 25% of the cases
the corpses are sometimes deliberately put on public display
83% of the rapes investigated were committed by officers, usually in front of their own men
many of the victims (61%) are gang-raped
some are held prisoner for periods of months for the purpose of repeated rape
the victims include small girls as young as 5 years old
