137 internally displaced persons from the Tenasserim River basin fleeing a Burma army seek-and-destroy operation have reached Thailand.
On May 10, 2000, 32 families, comprising 137 Karen villagers fled to Thailand at Ban Phu Rakam in Suan Phung District, Ratchburi province. They were allowed to enter by Thai authorities and were shifted to a temporary settlement at Ban Huai Kamu. Those villagers are from Tenasserim Riverside at the area of Buthawplaw (Kyaukpa). More than two hundred villagers had tried to escape from military operations but only about half of them managed to reach Thailand. The rest are trapped inside Burma.
On the 8th April, Burma army's Coastal Military Command (CMC) ordered the military divisions under its command to launch more search and destroy operations to kill whoever they see in the jungle.
